Alabama Issues New Child Support Guidelines

Alabama child support guidelines have now been updated for divorcing parents, with the amount rising for for middle-income families and falling for extremely poor and and upper-income families. The new figues only apply to cases filed after January 1, 2009.

The new guidelines are made to reflect the current cost of raising children. The old guidelines set a schedule based on a combined parental income of $120,000.00 The new guidelines set child support for combined incomes of $240,000.00. Most Alabama families whose income is above poverty level, about $19,000.00 for a family with two children, will see an increase in child support. Families with very low incomes will see their child support payments go down.The guidelines will be reviewed every four years.
